Teaching on the family is always dangerous business. No other set of relationships (marriage, family, parenting) consumes so much of our lives or is as easily intertwined with our identity as these. Because of that, satan loves to sow seeds of lives. Here are some of his favorites…
1. You’re a failure.
2. You’re the only whose family or marriage struggles with (fill in the blank).
3. You can never have the kind of marriage or family that so-and-so has.
4. Your situation is beyond hope or help.
If we listen to these lies, then our tendency will be to run away or feel more like a failure when the messages in church turn to this subject. It’s crazy how we can twist almost anything that’s said into something that feels condemning to us. How do I know? Because I have to fight against the same lies.
The truth is that CrossBridge is a community of grace. Together, we’re a safe place where broken and imperfect people find the love and power of a perfect and good Heavenly Father. Let’s resist the isolating lies that condemn us. Let’s resist keeping up the facades that we are inclined to use to convince others we’re “okay.”
God can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine–and he will as we turn to him, falling at his feet, crying out for help. I hope to see you this Father’s Day.
